Meet the Need: Day 37 | By Families For Families

Raising children with special needs can be difficult for a family. There are a lot of unknowns at first and families might not know exactly where to turn for help. In 1995, a small group of parents got together to pool their resources and help each other with the myriad questions they all had.

That small group has developed into the local non-profit Wisconsin Family Assistance for Education, Training and Support or WI FACETS. I spoke with Associate Director Courtney Salzer about how they got started, what their programs look like and how they are helping individuals and families deal with special needs issues.

They’ve grown into a state-wide resource network, running support groups and workshops on issues like communicating effectively with a child’s school and self advocacy. Plus, all the services are completely free of charge.
